How to see who unfollowed you on Instagram

One download cannot tell you who left. Unfollows happen over time, so you need two follower lists from different dates—then compare them. Put the earlier list in List A and the later list in List B; A only is who dropped off between those dates.

Two different questions

Step by step

  1. At your first date (T1), request a download from Accounts Center — Download your information . Select Followers and following (or followers only if that option appears).
  2. Save the ZIP somewhere dated—e.g. a folder named followers-2026-04-01.
  3. Wait days or weeks, then export again at T2. Keep that ZIP in a separate dated folder.
  4. From each ZIP, open connections/followers_and_following and find the followers JSON (often followers_1.json).
  5. Open the compare tool.
  6. Upload T1 followers to List A and T2 followers to List B.
  7. Paste both sides, leave the defaults on, click Compare lists, and open A only.

Reading the results

  • A only — in your T1 followers list, but gone from T2 (likely unfollowed during that window)
  • B only — new followers who appeared after T1
  • Intersection — still following you at both dates

Common mistakes

  • Only one download. You cannot spot unfollows without a before-and-after pair.
  • Using Following on one side. Both lists must be followers snapshots—not Following vs Followers.
  • Same date twice. Two exports from the same day will show little or no change.
  • Mixing up T1 and T2. Earlier goes in A; later goes in B. Swap them and A only means the opposite.
  • Overwriting folders. Label each ZIP by date so you always know which is older.

If results look off

  • A only is empty? Confirm T1 and T2 are actually different dates and in the right slots.
  • Too many names? Strip @ prefixes, use usernames not display names, and turn case-sensitive off.
  • Cannot find the JSON? Unzip and search for filenames containing “follower”.

Can one export file show who unfollowed me?

No. You need two follower lists from different dates to see who left.

Which side is List A and which is List B?

Earlier followers (T1) in A, later followers (T2) in B. A only is your unfollowed list.

Do I need an app that logs into Instagram?
